A Catastrophe-Theory Model for Simulating Behavioral Accidents
نویسندگان
چکیده
Behavioral accidents are a particular type of accident. They are caused by inappropriate individual behaviors and faulty reactions. Catastrophe theory is a means for mathematically modeling the dynamic processes that underlie behavioral accidents. Based on a comprehensive data base of mining accidents, a computerized catastrophe model has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. This model systematically links individual psychological, group behavioral, and mine environmental variables with other accident causing factors. It answers several longstanding questions about why some normally safe behaving persons may spontaneously engage in unsafe acts that have high risks of serious injury. Field tests with the model indicate that it has three important uses: It can be used as a n effective training aid for increasing employee safety consciousness; it can be used as a management laboratory for testing decision alternatives and policies; and i t can be used to help design the most effective work teams. Evaluation on Coal Miner’s Emergency Response Capacity Based on the Catastrophe Theory and Triangular Fuzzy Number
The production environment of coal mine is complex and tough, so once dangerous situation appears it requires coal miners take accurate and effective emergency measures. Actually, the occurrence and further expansion of a large number of mining accidents are associated with coal miners’ mishandling of emergency. Therefore, evaluating coal miners’ emergency response capacity is the significant w...
متن کاملLeadership, Safety Culture and Catastrophe: Lessons from 10 Cases Studies from 7 Safety Critical Industries
In all safety critical industries, catastrophic accidents can happen, and have happened in the past. These accidents are not industry specific and the obvious commonality is the high inherent risk associated with the activities undertaken. However, other common themes can be identified in the root causes of the ten accidents in seven different industrial sectors reviewed in this paper. These ar...
متن کاملOn the Validity of Simulating Stagewise Development by Means of PDP Networks: Application of Catastrophe Analysis and an Experimental Test of Rule-Like Network Performance
This article addresses the ability of Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) networks to generate stagewise cognitive development in accordance with Piaget’s theory of cognitive epigenesis. We carried out a replication study of the simulation experiments by McClelland (1989) and McClelland and Jenkins (1991) in which a PDP network learns to solve balance scale problems. In objective tests motiva...
متن کاملAttitudes Toward Catastrophe
In light of climate change and other global threats, policy commentators sometimes urge that society should be more concerned about catastrophes. This paper reflects on what society’s attitude toward low-probability, high-impact events is, or should be. We first argue that catastrophe risk can be conceived of as a spread in the distribution of losses. Based on this conception, we review studies...
متن کاملCritical temperature of the lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) alloy
Liquid metals such as Bi and Pb and Pb–Bi eutectic alloy are serious contenders for use as coolant in LMFBRs in lieu of sodium due to a number of attractive characteristics (high density, low moderation, low neutron absorption and activation, high boiling point and poor interaction with water and air, etc.). Analysis of hypothetical accidents is of relevance to predict the catastrophe involving...
